Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson

Wow! Such a treat! Joshua and I spent the afternoon enjoying the Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. It is sort of a botanical garden mixed with a zoo. It is set right in the middle of Saguaro National Forest.

Hiking at Piestewa Peak on the Nature Trail

I love the Nature Trail at Piestewa Peak. It is amazing to think that it is right in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the country. Once you get back into the mountains, you feel like the city is miles away!

Christmas 2012

Neighborhood Christmas Village - Near 44th St. and Camelback Rd.

Christmas Eve was fun. I made dinner for family and then we walked over to a huge light display in our neighborhood. This is no normal display. The entire yard is turned into a Christmas village, complete with its own window displays, hot cocoa stand and holiday store for purchasing holiday treats.
One of 4 window displays

Christmas was not quite what I had imagined. I was up all night long on Christmas Eve night, sick. It was awful. I can't remember ever being quite that sick. The doctor suspects that it was more likely a stomach bug and less likely a case of food poisoning, but whatever it was, it left me with very little appetite even as I type this 5 days later. The smell and sight of certain foods just makes my stomach do a flip flop. So, Christmas for me was spent curled up on the couch under a blanket, dozing in and out of consciousness. We did not have a Christmas meal, and in fact I sent all of the parts of pieces for our Christmas meal out the door and home with my Mom for my Aunt to cook yesterday. The idea of even being near a turkey just makes me cringe. Thankfully, my mom and husband are easy going. Although it was not ideal, we all made the best of a bad situation and enjoyed spending a day just relaxing. Finally, no post is complete without a mention of our four legged companion. Halo had a very nice first Christmas in the Oehler house. He loved his new toys and chowed down on a big bone.

Christmas Eve Weekend

Christmas around here is not just one day, especially now that we have two families. We kicked off the weekend with breakfast at Bill Johnson's (a Phoenix icon for over 55 years) and then a tour of a Microdwell exhibit (alternative spaces for simple living) with Josh's parents.

I rounded out the day by working on Josh's family's Christmas tradition of Pepparkakors.

Today we woke up and Joshua suggested that we take a hike in the McDowell Mountains with my Mom, Aunt and Halo. I told my Mom that she is officially and Arizonan now that she has taken her first Christmas - Desert Hike.

Decomposing Saguara

I stole a kiss under the mistletoe.

A Christmas halo

And, our doorbell has been abuzz with close friends dropping in to wish us a Merry Christmas and exchange presents. Our cups are brimming and the holiday has not even really began yet. This really is the best time of the year!

We visited Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Gardens with cousins.  Our house is decorated and we are ready for a visit from Santa! And, I am plum full of Christmas spirit.

Have a holly, jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year.....
